چکیده

The paper characterizes the mixed-strategy equilibria in all-pay auctions with endogenous prizes that depend positively on own effort and negatively on the effort of competitors. Such auctions arise naturally in the context of investment games, lobbying games, and promotion tournaments. We also provide an experimental analysis of a special case which captures the strategic situation of a two-stage game with investment preceding homogenous Bertrand competition. We obtain overinvestment both relative to the mixed-strategy equilibrium and the social optimum. JEL Classification: C92, D44, L13, O31.

All-Pay Auctions Versus Lotteries as Provisional Fixed-Prize Fundraising Mechanisms: Theory and Evidence∗

We compare two fixed-prize mechanisms for funding public goods, an all-pay auction and a lottery, where public good provision can only occur if the participants’ contributions equal or exceed the fixed-prize value. We show that the provisional nature of the fixed-prize means that efficiency and endowment conditions must both be satisfied to assure positive public good provision. Our main findin...

All-Pay Auctions vs. Lotteries as Provisional Fixed-Prize Fundraising Mechanisms: Theory and Evidence∗

We study two provisional fixed-prize mechanisms for funding public goods: an all-pay auction and a lottery. In our setting, the public good is provided only if the participants’ contributions are greater than the fixed-prize value; otherwise contributions are refunded. We prove that in this provisional fixed prize setting, lotteries can outperform all-pay auctions in terms of expected public go...

All-pay Auctions with Budget Constraints and Fair Insurance

We study all-pay auctions with budget-constrained bidders who have access to fair insurance before bidding simultaneously over a prize. We characterize a unique equilibrium for the special cases of two bidders and one prize, show existence and a heuristic for finding an equilibrium in the case of multiple bidders and multiple prizes. We end with an example of non-uniqueness of equilibria for th...

All-Pay Auctions with Private Values and Resale

This paper studies all-pay auctions with resale opportunities within an independentprivate-value framework. Given the existence of a resale market, the primary players will compete more aggressively over an indivisible prize. We characterize a symmetric equilibrium for all-pay auctions with private values and resale and derive a revenueranking result for all-pay auctions with and without resale...

Factors Influencing Online Auction Sellers’ Intention to Pay: an Empirical Study Integrating Network Externalities with Perceived Value

Despite the popularity of online auctions as a new e-commerce operating model, few studies have explored why sellers intend to pay for the services of particular auction sites, especially while other free auction services exist. Developed on the basis of the theory of perceived value, this study includes network externalities in seller perceptions and explores why sellers intend to pay for thes...
